June 6, 2009---WWW.TurtleUniverse.com participated in a Terrapin conservation and education event at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. The star organization plans to release terrapins it rescued and raised at key locations over the summer. The event also featured a wade in with Mayor Ellen Moyer and event participants like T.U. managing director J.  Smith and many other citizens concerned and involved in  improving the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. The Turtle Universe provided cold water in our signature "Do the Universe Good...One Turtle at a Time Coozies" (see gifts under $10), donating 15% of our sales to the Maritime Museum. For more information on how to schedule a TurtleUniverse.com appearance and donation at your event, see our contact us link.

==================================================================== May 23, 2009--WWW.TurtleUniverse.com First Annual World Turtle Day Donation to go to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle R
escue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Island, North Carolina, the American Tortoise Rescue of Malibu, California, and Indiana Turtle Care of New Palestine, Indiana.

  Western Pond Turtle

World Turtle Day was initiated by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit
organization in Malibu, California.  It is a day meant to increase respect for and knowledge about one of the world’s oldest creatures, the turtle.  In a press release dated 5/2/09, Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson, founders of ATR, state that “These gentle animals have been around for about 200 million years, yet they are rapidly disappearing as a result of the live food markets, habitat destruction and the cruel pet trade”.  Tellem and Thompson advocate the humane treatment of all animals, especially reptiles.

Hawaii must agree, as they have declared May 23 as Sea Turtle Day.  Currently, all seven species of sea turtles are arguably the most endangered animals on earth.  By-catch from destructive industrial fishing operations, loss of nesting habitat from new construction, and illegal trade are among the many causes for this.

This year the founders of www.TurtleUniverse.com wanted to celebrate World Turtle Day too!  Turtle Universe is a new organization in Edgewater, Maryland, that was started up by three ladies who enjoy turtles and decided to join together to help.  Our aim is to promote awareness and to support educational efforts towards rescue and environmental issues relating to turtles.  We are so committed to this that we have pledged to donate 7% of our total sales to such causes, which are nominated for and voted on by our customers.

And the winners are… We are proud to announce that our World Turtle Day 2009 donations will go to American Tortoise Rescue of Malibu, California; The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Island, North Carolina; and Indiana Turtle Care, operated by Marty Lapree of New Palestine, Indiana.

You will find great photos for use in your articles as well as links to turtle organizations and turtle related cards and gifts of which a portion of the proceeds will go to these turtle rescue efforts at www.TurtleUniverse.com. There is also a nifty email a friend feature right from the website.  Call us at 443-534-5281.

Happy World Turtle Day!

The Humane Society of the United States Celebrates World Turtle Day 2009

May 21, 2009

The Humane Society of the United States marks World Turtle Day, May 23, by celebrating advances in the past year to protect turtles and tortoises. These animals benefited from strong new regulations, unprecedented enforcement efforts and the dedicated work of animal advocates. The HSUS also applauds Mutts cartoonist and HSUS Board Member Patrick McDonnell, who is celebrating turtles with affection and humor in his cartoon strip this week.

“World Turtle Day calls attention to these remarkable animals and the urgent need to protect them in their natural habitats,” says Beth Preiss, director of the exotic pets campaign for The HSUS. “The Humane Society of the United States encourages people to enjoy the wonder of the world’s turtles in the wild, but to keep them out of the pet trade — both for their health and ours.”  For more information go to: http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publications/press_releases/hsus_celebrates_world_turtle_day_052109.html?log-event=sp2f-view-item&nid=48585581

Cathleen Hulbert wrote the Turtle Universe team about a new book she released in February, which has a strong conservation message embodied in a story about time-travel. We have not read the book yet, but we like the fact that a portion of the profits support sea-turtle conservation through the World Turtle Trust. According to the author, one of the characters in the book gets involved in sea turtle conservation, and much of the conversation is around turtles and their protection as a way to honor Mother Earth. Since we have not read the bok, we cannot endorse it; however we are hapy to share wher website for you to decide what you think on your own. We would love to hear your feedback on this story, and of course the donations from a portion of the proceeds of the book are for a good turtle cause. Visit her website  www.cathleenhulbert.com to find out more about the book: "The First Lamp."
